STPA Certification Track

This course guides you through an STPA mini project to apply for the STPA Practitioner Certificate. You will choose a system and apply STPA in four iterations using the provided templates. You will submit your work during each iteration, and you'll receive individual instructor comments and feedback to incorporate on the next iteration. The final submission is evaluated against the certificate criteria. If the criteria are met, you will receive the STPA Practitioner Certificate. Prerequisites: Prior to this course, you must complete the System Safety and STPA course as well as the live STPA exercises course.

STPA Live Group Exercises (add-on)

In this virtual course, we'll apply STPA together on a real-world application. The instructor will describe a safety-critical system and provide tips and guidance to begin STPA. We will organize into groups of 2-4 people and work on the first STPA step. You can ask the instructor for help as you work on the problem. The instructor will review the answers in class, provide comments and feedback to the class, and provide guidance on the next step. We will continue for each step of STPA, including developing informal and formal scenarios (STPA Step 4). The class will be recorded for use in future classes. You may opt out of the video for future classes. The system will be a real control system in an aircraft, but the exercise is designed for participants from any industry. No special aircraft knowledge is required to participate in the exercise. We'll meet virtually Nov 17 and 19, 10am-2pm Eastern time. Prerequisites: Safety Engineering and STPA Class. Instructor: Dr. John Thomas

Safety Engineering and STPA (Self-paced)

This course covers modern system safety engineering, including common gaps and solutions. Most of the course focuses on the System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) method developed at MIT to tackle the challenges of increasingly complex systems. This approach, now integrated into global safety and engineering standards, is designed to anticipate and mitigate flaws in complex, engineered systems. You will learn to identify and analyze flawed control loops, understand the systems view of complex software and human behavior, and learn practical ways to improve safety in your organization. The course emphasizes a top-down approach to bake in safety from the concept phase, develop safety constraints, and create more practical solutions. This course is perfect for beginners in system safety as well as those experienced in failure-based approaches (e.g., FMEA, FHA, Fault Trees, HAZOP) who are seeking to broaden their knowledge.
